Biography

Roedd William Edwyn Isaac (1905–1995) yn fotanegydd o Gymro a fe dreuliodd rhan fwyaf o'i yrfa yn Affrica.

Bywyd cynnar

Fe'i ganwyd ym Mhenygraig, Rhondda yn 1905. Roedd ei dad John Isaac (1875-1964) yn hanu o Drewiliam, Rhondda ac yn gweithio fel Uwcharolygydd Cynorthwyol i'r British Workmen Assurance Company ac roedd ei wraig Leah (neé Payne) (1878-1965) yn hanu o Lansamlet. Fe briodasant yng Ngorffennaf 1904.

William oedd yr hynaf o bedwar o blant ac roedd ganddo dair chwaer : Gwyneira (1907), Catherine (Kitty) Eluned (1909) a Sinai Megan (1915). Yn ddiweddarach fe symudodd y teulu i Aberdâr ac roeddent yn mynychu Capel Nazareth.

Addysg

Wedi astudio am ei raddau B.Sc. a Ph.D. yng Ngholeg Prifysgol De Cymru a Mynwy (bellach Prifysgol Caerdydd), ac hefyd treulio cyfnod ym Mhrifysgol Birmingham, fe allfudodd i Dref y Penrhyn yn 1933. Enillodd Ysgoloriaeth Ymchwil Thomas Smartt i astudio ecoleg gwymon ym Mhrifysgol Capetown, De Affrica ac yn ddiweddarach fe symudodd i Labordai Tymheredd Isel y Llwyodraeth (Government Low Temperature Research Laboratory), hefyd yn Capetown . Tua diwedd y 40au, dychwelodd i Brifysgol Capetown a pharhau gyda’i waith ar wymon.

Priodi a theulu

Yn 1936 fe briododd Frances Margaret Leighton. Roedd William Isaac yn Dad i efeilliaid (1937) ac hefyd un ferch (1948). Fe ddisgleiriodd yr efeilliaid yn y byd academaidd gyda’r hanesydd Rhys Isaac yn ennill Gwobr Pulitzer (1983) am ei lyfr The Transformation of Virginia 1740-1760, , a’r anthropolegydd Glynn Isaac wedi gweithio ym Mhrifysgolion Berkeley a Harvard.

Gyrfa

O 1953 hyd 1961 roedd yn Bennaeth yr Adran Fotaneg ym Mhrifysgol Capetown, fel olynydd yr Athro Robert Adamson [1]. Yn fuan wedyn’ fe’i dyrchafwyd yn Athro (gan draddodi ei ddarlith agoriadol ar destun planhigion y môryn Ebrill 1955) ac hefyd yn Gymrawd o Gymdeithas Linneaidd Llundain .

Oherwydd gwrthwynebiad William a Margaret i Apartheid yn Ne Affrica, symudodd y teulu i Kenya yn 1961 lle bu William yn Bennaeth Adran Fotaneg Coleg Prifysgol Nairobi (bellach Prifysgol Nairobi). Tra yn rhedeg yr Adran sefydlodd Ganolfan Ymchwil Moana ger traeth Diani (43km i’r gogledd o Mombasa) gyda nawdd gan Lywodraeth Prydain.

Wedi ymddeol yn 1970, symudodd gyda Frances i Benrhyn Mornington, Awstralia. Bu farw yn 1995.
