Biography

Surgeon Rear-Admiral W.J. Elliot OStJ, CD, QHS, MD, CM. Surgeon Rear-Admiral Elliot (12 January 1914 – 30 November 1979) was the 22nd Canadian Surgeon General.
Born in Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, Walter J., was educated at Queen’s University, where he graduated with a Medical Degree in 1937. He also completed post-graduate “training at the Sick Children’s Hospital, [in] Toronto [, Ontario]” from 1943 to 1944.
Elliot joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) in 1940, and “served as medical officer in Royal Navy escort ships on the North Atlantic until June 1942, when he transferred to the [Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve] (RCNVR) and was appointed to [Her Majesty's Canadian Ship] HMCS Naden.”
He joined the regular force in 1946 and throughout his subsequent career as a naval medical officer served in several ships, including HMCS Stadacona in 1954, HMCS Magnificent in 1956, and HMCS Bonaventure in 1957.
Elliot was promoted to Commodore in 1961 and appointed Deputy Surgeon General, and Surgeon General in 1964.
Surgeon Rear-Admiral Elliot died 30 November 1979 at the age of 64.
