Biography

Tom Viggiano is an American former ice hockey player and head coach who previously headed the program at Kent State.

Career

From 1980-84, Detroit native Tom Viggiano tallied 97 goals and 106 assists in 96 games for the Kent State Golden Flashes. Viggiano became the first four year varsity lettermen and first ice hockey player to be inducted into the Kent State University Varsity-K Sports Hall of Fame. Viggiano played his junior hockey with the Detroit Jr. Red Wings and Redford Royals of the Great Lakes Jr. Hockey League (GLJHL). In the 1979-80 season, Viggiano tallied 30 goals, 46 assists, 76 pts. in 44 games for the Redford Royals. After his playing career, Viggiano was named as the interim head coach for Kent State when John Wallin resigned in the summer of 1987. After a poor showing Kent declined to remove his interim tag and began to search for a full-time replacement. While Viggiano was considered for the position it ultimately went to Bill Switaj. After his college coaching career, Viggiano in 1998-99 became the co-head coach of Detroit Compuware in the Tier II NAJHL hockey league where Compuware posted a 72-2-2 record. In his 1989-90 NAJHL campaign, Viggiano helped lead Compuware to a 38-7-4 record.
