Biography

Thomas G. McGinn, M.D., M.P.H. is an American physician and researcher, an expert in clinical decision support. He is the author of over 100 scientific papers, evidence-based medicine reviews, position papers, book chapters, and letters. He is the principal author on 33 papers and senior author on an additional 34 pieces.

McGinn is the David J. Greene Professor of Medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and currently Chair of its Department of Medicine and also the Department of Medicine of its affiliated Northwell Health. McGinn is also a Senior Vice President and Executive Director of the Medicine Service Line of Northwell Health.

Biography

McGinn graduated from medical school at the State University of New York (Downstate) in 1989 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Bronx Municipal Hospital Center in the Bronx, NY in 1992. He continued at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center as Chief Resident from 1992 – 1993.

McGinn became the Medical Director of Internal Medicine Associates at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City in 1999. He created the Hospitalist Program there in 2000 and served as its first director. In 2001 he was appointed Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai, and in 2002 was appointed Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine.

In 2011 McGinn moved to the North Shore – LIJ Health System, currently called Northwell Health, where he was appointed Chair of the Department of Medicine. In 2013 he assumed additional responsibilities as Senior Vice President and Executive Director for the Medicine Service Line of Northwell Health.

In addition to these administrative roles, McGinn is a funded researcher on a variety of federally funded grants. He serves as Principal Investigator on a project funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Spread the Word: Integrating Clinical Prediction Rules at the Point of Care, where the goal of is to develop a clinical prediction rule integration lab that will assist ambulatory clinics bring evidence-based guidelines to the point of care. He has been recognized nationally and internationally for his pioneering work in evidence-based medicine (EBM), deriving and validating clinical prediction rules (CPR), and integrating these rules into electronic clinical decision support systems. He is the author of the clinical prediction rules chapter of the highly regarded JAMA series Users' Guides to the Medical Literature and published nearly 100 articles with a focus on clinical prediction risk and decision-making in primary care. For over 15 years he has taught, researched, and worked in the area of academic general internal medicine with a focus on providing high quality health care in urban communities.

Affiliations and positions

McGinn is a former Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center (2001 - 2011), a former president of the Association of Chiefs and Leaders of General Internal Medicine (2010 - 2011), Co-Chair of the Health Policy Committee of the National Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), among many other leadership positions in academic general internal medicine over the past 15 years.
