Biography

Sylvain Perier, professionally known as SP 38, is a French painter, street artist, billsticker and performer. He was born in 1960 in Coutances, Normandy (France). First classified as belonging to the Figuration libre artistic movement, this international figure of street art has produced artistic works in many countries.

Biography

Sylvain Perier was born and grew up in Coutances, Manche, in 1960. From 1976 to 1979, he studied for two years at " La Poulinière " art school in Saint-Lô, and then joined the Fine Arts School in Cherbourg.

After his studies, he lived in Paris for fourteen years (1981–1995). Settling first in Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhood, he then continuously moved around and was involved with a number of artistic squats : CAES, Boinod, Garage 53, Europaint, Trévise, Forge de Belleville, Turquetil, rue du Dragon, rue Blanche, Grange aux Belles... SP 38 was also part of "Zen Copyright", an underground artistic movement which gathered the artists Davis-Dutreix, Momo, Pedro, Ed. Néant and Myster X.

In 1985, SP 38 was on the first meeting of the graffiti and urban art movement in Bondy (France), on the VLP's initiative, with Speedy Graphito, Miss Tic, Jef Aérosol, Epsylon Point, Blek le rat, Futura 2000, Nuklé-Art, Banlieue-Banlieue…

In 1987, he participated in the exhibition "Free Art, l'année Beaubourg" at a Free-Time in Paris, which was organized to mark the tenth anniversary of Centre Pompidou, with Monique Peytral, Jean Starck, Robert Combas, Miss Tic, François Boisrond, Lolochka, Jérôme Mesnager, Henri Schurder, Daniel Baugeste, Jef Aérosol, les VLP, Ody Saban, Pascal Barbe, Paella Chimicos, Epsylon Point, Banlieue-Banlieue, Rafael Gray, Frédéric Voisin…

SP 38 has performed frequently in rue Dénoyez, painting and putting-up posters on the walls in this Belleville Parisian neighbourhood. His works have been exhibited at the Frichez-nous la Paix Gallery. Until the gallery shut down in June 2015, he remained highly invested in this location.

In August 1995, he moved to Berlin (Germany), which to him "represented the place where everything was made possible for the Street art movement". He joined German artistic squats : Tacheles, Acud, Prora in Rügen, Blühende Landschaften Gallery, Stattbad. He scanned the city, putting-up posters carrying ironic statements, such as "Vive la bourgeoisie", "Vive la crise".

Since 2008, SP 38 has been very active in the "Instin" literary and artistic adventure initiated in 1997 by the French writer Patrick Chatelier, by sticking his posters "INSTIN" on the walls of many towns in the world.

In 2016, SP 38 is still living in Berlin. He travels the world, attending exhibitions, painting performances and displaying his stickers and posters.
