Ricky Byrdsong

Ricky Byrdsong (January 17, 1956 – July 2, 1999) was an American college basketball coach and educator. He served as the head coach of the Northwestern Wildcats men's basketball team from 1993 to 1997.

Ricky Byrdsong is best known for his efforts to combat racism and promote diversity. He organized a basketball tournament called "Hoops Express" that aimed to bring together racially diverse teams and provide a platform for dialogue on racial issues.

Ricky Byrdsong tragically lost his life on July 2, 1999, when he was fatally shot by a white supremacist named Benjamin Smith. Byrdsong was walking with his two young sons in Skokie, Illinois, when Smith targeted him in a hate-driven killing spree.

Ricky Byrdsong was a strong advocate for diversity and equality. In addition to organizing the "Hoops Express" basketball tournament, he created programs to engage young people in discussions about racism and promote understanding and acceptance across different backgrounds.

Ricky Byrdsong is remembered as a beloved coach, mentor, and leader. His tragic death brought attention to the ongoing issue of hate crimes and racism in society. In his memory, Northwestern University established the "Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate" to promote unity and honor his commitment to fighting racial discrimination.
