Biography
Nandita Roy (born 3 April 1955) is an Indian film maker and screenwriter. Her directorial debut was with Shiboprosad Mukherjee for the film Icche (2011). The two have also directed Accident, Muktodhara, Alik Sukh, Ramdhanu, Bela Seshe and Praktan.
Early life
Nandita Roy was born on 3 April 1955 at Mumbai. She completed her schooling from St. Joseph's Convent High School, Mumbai, Vile Parle. She graduated with Economics from Parle College. She began work as a primary school teacher in St Joseph's Convent. Later she studied for her post grad in Economics from University of Mumbai, Kalina. She married Nitish Roy in 1977.
Career
Nandita Roy began her professional career in the year 1978, she co-directed 'Agadoom-Bagadoom' a short puppet film for children; she was also a glove-puppet operator in the same film. Following which she has been a part of several projects and worked with many renowned directors.
- An assistant editor in Nitish Mukherjee's film 'Nayanshyama' (1983) & 'Rabibar' (1996).
- An assistant director in Mrinal Sen's 'Tasveer Apni Apni' (1984).
- An assistant to Govind Nihalani in the film and tele-serial 'Tamas'.
- Assisted Nitish Roy as a set dresser in Govind Nihalani's film 'Party'.
- Worked as the Indian set dresser in the foreign production 'The Bengal Lancers' (unreleased).
- Assisted Nitish Roy as a set dresser and research assistant in Shyam Benegal's tele-serial 'Bharat ek khoj', 1988 (Discovery of India).
- Worked as an assistant editor in the Gammon India's documentary on the 2nd Hoogly Bridge.
- Worked as the chief assistant director and co-script writer in Nitish Roy's Bengali film 'Ek Poshla Brishti' (1989).
- Worked as the chief assistant director and co-scriptwriter in Nitish Roy's Bengali film 'Tobu Mone Rekho' (1993)
- She worked as the Indian set dresser in the foreign production 'The Jungle Book' (1994) directed by Stephen Sommers.
- Worked as the chief assistant director and co-scriptwriter in Nitish Roy's Bengali film 'Jamai No.1' (1997)
She is responsible for ETV's first non-fiction & fiction production house. This is located in West Bengal and she was the Creative and Administrative Manager of ETV Bangla. She is responsible for creating 19 original non-fiction programmes and starting the concept of hour-long television films on the channel by well-known directors. She conceptualised the first Bengali women's magazine programmes on television – 'Sreemoti'.
She started her own company named WINDOWS Productions along with her partner Shiboprosad Mukherjee. Together they produced many non-fiction and fiction programmes.

Achievements
- Icche did a theatrical run for 125 days. The National Film Archive of India accepted Icche as part of their collection for cultural and educational purposes. Icche was screened followed by an interactive session with the participants of the 8th batch of the 21-Day Certificate Course on Legal and Psychological Counseling for Women in Distress, University of Calcutta (29 January 2013). Icche has been included in the BEd curriculum of Visva-Bharati University. PVR Cinemas selected the film to be screened at Kolkata, Delhi & Mumbai as part of the Indian Panorama Film Festival.
- Hello Memsaheb, a comedy film, achieved commercial success.
- Accident was a thought-provoking and hard-hitting feature film. It was critically acclaimed. Accident was selected for the Indian Cinema Now Section of the 18th International Kerala Film Festival 2013. It ran in theatres successfully for 50 days.
- Muktodhara was the first Bengali film in a decade to be screened at the Rashtrapati Bhavan for the President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. He was all praise for the film. Muktodhara was also watched by the governor of West Bengal Sri. M.K Narayan. Muktodhara was accepted by Legal Aid Services of West Bengal as part of their curriculum for Post Graduate Studies in Counseling, 2013 (affiliated to University of Calcutta) and also has been included in the Certificate Course on Legal and Psychological Counseling for Women in Distress. It has been included in the BEd curriculum of Visva-Bharati University. It ran in theatres successfully for 75 days.
- Alik Sukh was premiered at the Marche du Film section in Cannes Film Festival in 2013. It had a pan India release in 2013. It was not only critically acclaimed but also did well commercially. It ran in theatres successfully for 50 days. The director duo received the Filmfare Award (East) 2014 for Best Direction for the film 'Alik Sukh'.
- Ramdhanu has achieved both commercial success and critical acclaim. It has been included in the BEd curriculum of Visva-Bharati University.
