Biography

Michele Alesia Johnson, Ph.D. is an American evolutionary biologist and is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Johnson obtained her B.S. at Wake Forest University and then received her Ph.D. in evolutionary biology at Washington University in St. Louis. She then continued to Michigan State University to complete her postdoctoral research on behavioral neuroscience. Johnson's current research focuses on the evolution of lizard behavior, specifically on the ecological factors that influence social behaviors and the physiological mechanisms that underlie those behaviors. Her latest publication describes the skin elasticity and secondary sexual signal size in the green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis).

Johnson is also heavily involved in many advocacy projects. She heavily supports initiatives to push for women in science and works with local elementary school teacher in San Antonio, Texas. For the past six years, Johnson has worked with 28 Trinity University undergraduates to produce 8 publications with 9 undergraduate co-authors, 52 conference presentations, 5 honors theses, and 11 external grants awarded to the undergraduate researches. Their fieldwork on lizards spans areas including Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and Texas.
