Biography
May Cohen, OC (born 1931) is a Canadian physician and educator.
Biography
May Lipshitz was born in Montreal, Quebec, 1931. She is the daughter of Sam and Manya Lipshitz. She was raised in Toronto, Ontario. She attended the University of Toronto medical school and graduated at the top of her class. She went on to practise as a family physician in Toronto for 20 years. Then, in 1977, she joined the Health Sciences faculty at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She was associate dean of Health Services from 1991 to 1996.
At McMaster, she established the Women's Health Office. She also instigated the creation of a women's health curriculum in Ontario medical schools.
She married Dr. Gerry Cohen; the couple had three children.
Awards and honours
- Ortho award from the Federation of Medical Women of Canada
- Association of American Medical Colleges's Leadership Development Award
- Distinguished Service Award from the Hamilton Academy of Medicine
- The May Cohen Award for Women Mentors, named in her honour, is awarded by the Canadian Medical Association.
- McMaster University also established the May Cohen Chair in Women's Health.
- In October 2015, it was announced that Cohen would be inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2016.
