Fu, con John Marshall, tra i più importanti costruttori inglesi di microscopi tra la fine del Seicento e l’inizio del Settecento. Nella sua bottega londinese, prima in St. Paul Churchyard poi in Ludgate Street, costruiva e vendeva inoltre telescopi, occhiali e prismi.
