Biography

Joan Cassis (September 10, 1952- April 28, 1996) was an American photographer known nationally and internationally for her striking black and white portraiture work. She had a unique approach to her photography often carefully coloring the black and white photos with a brush and oil paints. Her work successfully blended photography and brush stroke painting.

Early life

Joan Cassis was born in September 10, 1952.

A Maryland native, she was raised in Woodmoor and attended Woodlawn High School graduating in 1970.

Career

Joan Cassis went on to attend Maryland Institute College of Art and graduated in 1974. After college, Cassis worked as a municipal government photographer before embarking on a free-lance photography career. In addition to photography she had a career as an art therapist and educator.

Her photographs were exhibited in galleries in Athens, Greece and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Her photographs are in the collection of the Portland Art Museum.

Death

Joan Cassis died April 28, 1996 of an aneurysm at the age of 43. She lived in Hampden, MD.
