Quick Facts
Biography
Jason Coy (born 10 November 1982) is a former Gaelic footballer for Knockmore GAA. Coy was brought up just outside of Ardagh in Cloghans, County Mayo. He attended Knockmore Primary School and Gortnor Abbey Secondary School in Crossmolina. He won Connacht and All-Ireland GAA Schools titles under Gerry Leonard for Gortnor Abbey.
Court Case
During the Mayo 2003 Under-21 Final between Knockmore and Ballaghaderreen, he was accused of elbowing his opponent Michael Collerhan in the jaw. He was accused in a trial of GBH, where his tackle on an opponent was seen to be questionable and possibly violent. The incident was a topic of a discussion in Dáil Éireann. Because of the incident, the GAA considered a review of the rules of the sport. During the match there was an instant reaction in the crowd but the referee did not see the incident. The incident was brought to the attention of the referee immediately by a Ballaghaderreen player. Despite the referee conferring for a long time with the linesmen and the umpires, there was no witness to the incident. In court, video footage of the incident was shown.
After a trial, Judge Mary Devins cleared Coy of any wrongdoing. Despite breaking the jaw and several teeth of his opponent, the incident was dismissed in court and Coy walked away without any punishment.
Knockmore
Coy was part of the Knockmore team that reached the final of the 2009 Mayo Senior Championship, but was injured and did not feature in the final. He played in the semi-final of the 2015 Championship and was part of the Knockmore squad that reached the final of the 2016 Championship.
