McAndrew was a replacement player for the Milwaukee Brewers during spring training prior to the 1995 season. Replacement players took over for professional baseball players when the Major League Baseball Players Association went on strike. The strike was resolved at the end of spring training. Due to his role as a replacement player, McAndrew was blacklisted and not permitted membership in the Major League Baseball Players Association.
McAndrew was one of the first replacement players, along with Mike Busch of the Los Angeles Dodgers, to reach the major league level after the strike was resolved.
