Biography

Sir Henry Gough, Knt (3 January 1649 – 24 January 1724), was Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1671/1672, and was elected as a Tory MP in Tamworth in 1685. He was knighted in 1678 for services his grandfather rendered to Charles I in 1642.
Gough was the eldest son of John Gough (died 1665) of Old Fallings and his second wife, Bridget, the daughter of Sir John Astley of Woodeaton, Oxfordshire.
He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1666. He was a student at Middle Temple in 1667 and lived at Perry Hall in Staffordshire.
He married Mary, the daughter of Sir Edward Littleton, 2nd Bt., of Pillaton Hall, Staffordshire in 1668.
Gough died on 24 January 1724 and was buried at Bushbury.
His sons included Sir Richard Gough (died 1728), Harry Gough (1681–1751), and Sir Henry Gough, 1st Baronet (1709–1774). Henry's son was Sir Henry Gough, 2nd Baronet, later Henry Gough-Calthorpe, 1st Baron Calthorpe. Their descendants form part of the Gough-Calthorpe family.
