Biography

Lieutenant General Sir Henry Bayly GCH (died 20 April 1846) was a British Army officer who became Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey. He was the second son of Nicholas Bayly.

Military career

Bayly was promoted from the half-pay of the 85th Regiment to an ensigncy in the Coldstream Guards on 30 October 1790. He was wounded at the Battle of Lincelles on 17 August 1793, and was promoted to Lieutenant in the Guards on 31 August 1793 and purchased a Captaincy in the regiment on 10 September 1799. During this period, he fought with the Guards during the invasion of Holland.

Bayly was appointed ADC to the Prince Regent on 9 February 1811, and was breveted major general on 1 January 1812.

He was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey in 1816. He retired from that post in 1821 and was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1825. He was then appointed GCH in 1834 and died in 1846.
