Biography
George Augustine Thomas O'Brien (1892 – 31 December 1973) was an Irish politician, economist and academic. He was first elected to Seanad Éireann as an independent member in 1948 by the National University of Ireland constituency. He was re-elected in 1951, 1954, 1957 and 1961. He lost his seat at the 1965 election.
He was Professor of National Economics and later Political Economy at University College Dublin from 1921 to 1961. He was president of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland between 1942 and 1946. In the 1960s he was one of the first chairmen of the Economic and Social Research Institute.
