Fatma Sultan (Ottoman Turkish: فاطمہ سلطان; 1642 – 16 April 1697) was an Ottoman princess, daughter of Sultan Ibrahim (r. 1640-1648) and the sister of Sultans Mehmed IV, Suleiman II and Ahmed II.
Early life
Fatma was born in 1642. She was the daughter of Ottoman Sultan Ibrahim and her mother in unknown.
Fatma was the eldest daughter of the Sultan and gained importance in the eyes of everyone. From this She became Ibrahim's favourite daughterwhen she was three her father betrothed her to Silahdar Yusuf Pasha who was Admiral of the Fleet. After Silahdar Yusuf died in 1646 Ibrahim betrothed Fatma to Fazli Pasha (died 1657)She was in the care of her aunt Atike Sultan who taught her.
Marriage to Fazli Pasha
The marriage between Fazli Pasha and Fatma held in 1656. Fatma was only fourteen that time. On the day of her marriage many celebrations took placeFatma was wearing a blue dress with a golden tiara. She was given 25,000 ducats in her dowry. She was also given a house by her brother. Turhan Hatice Sultan also presented her with gifts she gifted her a silver jewellery box. . The marriage held on 29 September 1656. Next day her trousseau and she was transported to her castle which was gifted her along with a house in her dowry.
After a year of their marriage Fazli Pasha died of lung cancer and she moved back to her brother's palace. Turhan Sultan appointed her for choosing the consorts for her brotherMehmed IV.
Charities
Fatma constructed number of monuments in Istanbul. In 1674 she constructed a water dispenser near the palace.She also reconstructed her own palace high was given to her as dowry. She also constructed soup kitchens, libraries, schools and mosques in different cities of Turkey.According to many historians she also created bakeries, spice shops in Istanbul.
Fatma also had a good relation with her sister Gevherhan Sultan. She constructed a bakery after her death .
Death
Fatma died on 16 April 1697 from a heart attack. She is buried in Turhan Hatice Sultan Mosque in Istanbul.
