Biography

Edward Black, Sr. was an American Republican Party politician from New Jersey, who served on the Monmouth County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Born about 1800, Edward Black operated a farm of over 100 acres (0.40 km2) on the west side of Matawan Creek. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
When Matavan Township was incorporated in 1857, he was elected as the township's first tax assessor, and served three years, leaving office in March 1860.
In 1873, he defeated Democratic candidate David C. Mealio and was elected to Matavan Township's seat on the Board of Chosen Freeholders. He would serve a one-year term on the Board before losing his seat in 1874 to Democrat John H. Farry.
Edward Black died on December 3, 1884 at his daughter's Asbury Park home. He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Matawan.
