Eddie Hassell (July 16, 1990 — November 1, 2020) was an American actor known for his roles in Surface (2005-2006), Oscar-nominated movie The Kids Are All Right (2010), and Devious Maids (2013).
Biography
Eddie Hassell was born Ed Taylor Hassell on July 16, 1990, in Corsicana, Texas.
On 16 April 2003, he appeared as PJ Collins in an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The following year, he was seen in the episode "Soup to Nuts" of the TV series Oliver Beene.
In 2005, he was cast as "Phil Mantz" in the pilot episode of Surface. Following the pilot episode, he played "Phil Nance," best friend of Miles Barnett (played by Carter Jenkins). Hassell was nominated for the "Best Performance in a TV Series (Drama) - Supporting Young Actor" award at the 2006 Young Artist Award.
2009 saw his big-screen debut with Roland Emmerich's 2012, starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet. The following year, he was cast as Clay, his most memorable role, in Lisa Cholodenko's romance comedy The Kids Are All Right, which starred Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, and Mark Ruffalo. For his work, he, along with other lead cast members, was nominated for "Best Acting Ensemble" at the 2010 Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards, 2010 Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards, and 2011 Central Ohio Film Critics Association. The film won "Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical" at the 2011 Golden Globes and was nominated for "Best Motion Picture of the Year" at the 2011 Oscars.
Most recently, in 2017, Hassell was seen as a waiter in Atsuko Hirayanagi's comedy Oh Lucy!, starring Shinobu Terajima and Josh Hartnett.
Death
On November 1, 2020, TMZ reported that Hassell died after being shot in the stomach while he was outside his girlfriend's apartment, in Grand Prairie, Texas.
