Biography

Eddie Allen, also known as E. J. Allen, (born July 12, 1957) is an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhornist.

Early life

Allen was born on July 12, 1957, in Milwaukee. 

He began playing the trumpet in junior high school and later studied music at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay. 

Career

After playing locally, Allen moved to New York in 1981. He first recorded with Charlie Persip's Superband in 1984 and since then has appeared on records with Muhal Richard AbramsCyrus ChestnutChico FreemanCraig Harris, drummer  Louis Hayes, drummer Bobby PreviteVanessa Rubin, and Mongo Santamaria (with whom he played extensively), among others. He has also collaborated with Art BlakeyBenny Carter, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Allen, who was the musical director (in addition to playing trumpet and contributing arrangements) for Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, has recorded as a leader for Enja and the Japanese Venus label.

Allen also works in rhythm and blues and rock.
