Biography
The Right Reverend Dr Derek Browning MA BD DMin (born 24 May 1962) is a minister of the Church of Scotland, who was nominated in October, 2016 to be the next Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He was formally elected to the office on 20th May 2017.
Early life and education
Browning was born in Edinburgh on 24 May 1962. He was educated at North Berwick High School, Corpus Christi College, Oxford, the University of St Andrews and received a doctorate of ministry from Princeton Theological Seminary.
Ordained ministry
He was minister at Cupar Old Parish Church, in Cupar, Fife (1987-2001) and thereafter minister at Morningside Parish Church in Edinburgh. He was Moderator of the Church of Scotland's Presbytery of St Andrews in 1996-97, Convener of the Prayer and Devotion Committee of the Church of Scotland's Panel on Worship 2000-2004 and Convener of the Church of Scotland's Assembly Arrangements Committee and General Assembly Business Committee.
In October 2016 he was nominated to succeed the Right Rev Dr Russell Barr as Moderator. He took office in May 2017. On Monday 4th September 2017 Dr Browning blessed the new Queensferry Crossing on the River Forth before the bridge was formally opened by Her Majesty the Queen.
