David Feldman
Quick Facts
Biography
David Feldman (born in Rio de Janeiro, 1977) is a Brazilian-Israeli Jazz and Bossa Nova musician, player of the Piano and also an arranger, producer, composer and sound-engineer.
Early life
David Feldman was born in a family of classical and early-music musicians. He started very early his musical studies, playing classical piano at the age of four. At that time, he would drive his piano teacher crazy, because he would never stick to what was written on the music sheet, always preferring to show his personal interpretation of the piece. When at the age of ten he heard “Misterioso” by Thelonious Monk, it became obvious that whatever he was doing had a name: improvisation. David studied with Ileana Carneiro, pt:Sheila Zagury, and later on David studied with the great Luiz Eça.
The New York Years
In 2000, David enrolled at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, graduating in 2002. In such a short period of time, he already worked with legends of jazz like Slide Hampton and Claudio Roditi, was invited to sit in at the Mingus Big Band and worked with Duduka da Fonseca and with brilliant young musicians, like Matt Garrison and Eli Degibri.
Back to Rio
In 2004, he was semi-finalist of the Solo Piano Competition at Montreux Jazz Festival. In Brasil, he plays with Leny Andrade, Leila Pinheiro, and also has plaid in duos with veterans Paulo Moura and Leo Gandelman. David also continues to collaborate with the great Brazilian NY based drummer Duduka da Fonseca, being the pianist in Duduka’s trio with excellent critic reviews, and incorporating Duduka as the drummer of the David Feldman Trio in New York.
David released in 2009 his first album "O Som do Beco Das Garrafas", very well received by the critics. Since then he has been performing in jazz festivals in Brasil and overseas, having performed more than four times at the Festival Internacional de Jazz de Punta del Este, where in 2014 he had clarinetist/saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera as special guest.
David's solo disc "piano" from 2014 was also received well by the critics.
In September 2016 David released the Horizonte album, with seven original songs, and the album was very well received by the critic. Per Mauro Ferreira "Horizonte confirms the carioca pianist as one of the great talents of today's brasilian instrumental music".
In Brazil David has worked with great artists such as Paulo Moura, Leo Gandelman, Leny Andrade, Leila Pinheiro, Carlinhos Brown, Jaques Morelenbaum, Maria Rita, Duduka da Fonseca, Toninho Horta, Raul de Souza, Bossa Cuca Nova, Wilson Simoninha, Totonho Villeroy, to mention a few.
