Biography

Colin McGrath (born 21 October 1975) is a Social Democratic and Labour Party politician from Northern Ireland. He has been an MLA for South Down since the 2016 election.
He was educated in St Patrick's Primary School, Saul, St Patrick's Grammar School, Downpatrick and SERC, Downpatrick. He graduated from the University of Ulster in 1998 in Community Youth Work.
Colin was a Councillor on Down District Council from 2005 and was reelected in 2011 and in 2014 was elected to the newly formed 'Supercouncil' Newry, Mourne & Down Council before moving to the NI Assembly in 2016.
Colin was a Youth Worker in Patrician Youth Centre from 1999. Having been a member from 1988 he understands and appreciates the importance that Youth Services play upon young people and is a positive advocate for them.
Joining the NI Assembly in May 2016 he is a member of the Education Committee, Business Committee and Procedures committee. He has worked alongside MP Margaret Ritchie from 2003 and covers the area around and north of the Mourne Mountains. Rural issues, accessibility to local services and youth issues are his main priorities.
He is an advocate of the Downe Hospital saying "I cannot understand why our local Trust do not adequately resource this important facility! Local people need it, and I will do all I can to help us get the services we need.'
