Biography

Carol Giardina is a history professor, author, and activist. As of 2017 she is an Assistant Professor of History at Queens College. She obtained her PhD in American history from the City University of New York.

She developed a network to refer people for illegal abortions at the University of Florida from 1963 to 1966.

In 1968 she co-founded Gainesville Women’s Liberation with Judith Brown; it was the first women’s liberation group in the South.

She was at the 1968 Miss America protest, and was also part of two feminist conferences in 1968, one at Sandy Springs, Maryland, and one at Lake Villa, Illinois.

She wrote Freedom For Women: Forging the Women’s Liberation Movement, 1953-1970 (2010).

She has been a member of Redstockings for a long time.

Giardina is featured in the feminist history film She's Beautiful When She's Angry.

In addition to her feminist work, she has also been part of the civil rights movement, the black power movement, and the labor movement.
