Biography

Bel-shimanni (Akkadian: Bêl-šimânni) was a Babylonian rebel leader, leading a revolt against the Achaemenid Empire in 484 BC. Bel-shimmani's rebellion was quickly defeated by Xerxes, who retook Babylon, and the cities Borsippa and Dilbat, which had chosen to support Bel-shimanni. Bel-shimanni's tenure as "King of Babylon" only lasted for a period of about two weeks, going by Babylonian documents dated to his "reign".

Two years after Bel-shimanni's defeat, another revolt cropped up in Babylon, led by another would-be-king, Shamash-eriba.
