Ardyth Alton

Ardyth Alton (3 October 1916—27 December 2007) was an American cellist and music teacher.

Ardyth was born on October 3, 1916, in Cherokee, Iowa. He father was an engineer on the Illinois Central Railroad and her mother played and sang music. She had a brother and three sisters.

She studied music at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, and attended summer courses at Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, New York. With the help of noted conductor Albert Stoessel, she was accepted into the Juilliard School's postgraduate program and received cello lessons from Felix Salmond and Leonard Rose.

Ardyth's career took off when she won a competition for management with the National Music League. She had several trios under Columbia Artists Management, including the American Concert Trio and the New York Concert Trio.

She gave concerts and became a member of Eugenie Dengel's trio The Hotel. From 1968, she taught cello at precollege and college at the Juilliard School, New York. She also taught music at the Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and SUNY at Purchase.

In addition to her daughter Ann Alton, her students included Bion Tsang, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Nanette Koch and Jane Kim.
