Biography

Andris Andreiko (17 October 1942 – 10 March 1976) was a three-time (1968, 1969, 1972) world champion and European champion (1974) in draughts. He also won eight national titles in 1961, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1970–1972, 1975.

Death

Andreiko developed an addiction to alcohol, and once met Igor Vasenin. After they had a drink in Andreiko's apartment, Andreiko fell asleep. Vasenin looked around, and decided to kill Andreiko and steal money and various merchandises. He wrapped an iron with a towel, hit Andreiko 17 times to the head, collected what he wanted and headed to the door. Incidentally, Andreiko's wife Lyubov, who did not live with him anymore, came for a visit. Vasenin invented some story that Andreiko is meeting a woman and asked not to disturb, but Lyubov suspected wrongdoing and called the police. Vasenin managed to escape before the police arrived, but soon realized that he will get caught and surrendered to the nearest police station – because of this he received 15 years of jail instead of death penalty.
