Biography

Andrew Cant (date of birth unknown, died 1728) was a Scottish clergyman and scholar, and Principal of the University of Edinburgh from 1675 to 1685.

He is believed to be the son of the Presbyterian minister and covenanter Andrew Cant (1590–1663).He was a minister of Edinburgh during the reign of Charles II, and consequently is assumed to have been an adherent of Episcopacy.

The same person, or perhaps his son, was deprived of his charge in Edinburgh, at the Revolution, and, on 17 October 1722 was consecrated as one of the bishops of the disestablished Episcopal Church in Scotland. This individual died in 1728.

He married Anne Burnett, daughter of Sir Thomas Burnet, 1st Baronet of Leys, Kincardineshire.
