Biography

Akl Awit (Arabic: عقل العويط‎‎ born 1952, Bziza) is a Lebanese poet, critic, literary journalist and academic professor. He is the editing director of the MULHAK, the weekly cultural supplement of the daily Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar. He has published eight poetry books in Beirut, and an anthology of his works has appeared in Cairo in 2002. His ninth poetry collection is in production. His poems have been translated from Arabic into many foreign languages, and have been published in various magazines and anthologies yhroughout France, England, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Akl Awit holds a PHD in modern Arabic literature, and teaches Modern poetry and journalism at the Saint Joseph University in Beirut.
Some of his literary, socio-cultural and political articles cause polemics. His Letter Addressed to God, an editorial which appeared on the front page of the newspaper on the eve of the American war against Iraq, provoked many reactions. Accused of blasphemy, he was brought before the courts.
