Abhishek Bhaskar

Abhishek Bhaskar ( born on April 30th, 1994 ) is an Indian Beatboxer, emcee, as well as a National Award winning Architect. He has been a pioneer in the Indian Beatboxing scene as he started Beatboxing from 2010, and professionally since 2012 with over 800+ shows to date. He is also the founder of B for BEATBOX ( Previously known as "VOICEBOX" ) which is India's first and leading company to conduct LIVE Beatboxing workshops / tutorials to the masses. This initiative was started by Abhishek Bhaskar in 2012 to help spread the exquisite art form of BEATBOXING as well as help build the foundations for the beatboxing community in India. 

He is also the founder of DERT Lab, an award winning, future-focused, design-centric firm, founded by Abhishek. DERT stands for Design, Education, Research & Technology. Founded in 2018 by Abhishek, DERT Lab is building youth-centric design culture helping young designers with skills and tools to brace for the future of automation.

Abhishek Bhaskar since a very young age was fascinated with sounds and the power of the human voice. His earliest recollection of him Beatboxing ( without actually knowing it was called "Beatboxing" was since his early school days where he would try to mimic the sounds produced by drummers and musicians, and later get caught in class for making weird sounds with his mouth and disturbing the class. He started off beatboxing at the age of 16 as a hobby, when one day in school, a fellow-cricketer friend of his, Karthik P, started Beatboxing during “Nets” sessions and Abhishek was instantly blown away, and curious to know what it was. Karthik then told Abhishek it was called “Beatboxing” and at that very moment, Abhishek was hooked onto it, and knew that he had to pursue it by any means necessary.So instantly, he asked Karthik to teach him the basics and kept practicing for a few weeks to get a hold of this newly discovered art form. After which, there was no stopping him. He was hooked and instantly in love with Beatboxing. 

In 2010, he performed for the first time at a Durga pooja festival ( yes, of all places, as that was the only event near his house that had a huge crowd ) and asked the organizers if he could perform, but the organizers had no idea what beatboxing was, so Abhishek beatboxed a small sample, and instantly they were hooked and squeezed in a 5 minute slot for Abhishek's performance. Within 2 minutes of Abhishek's performance, the entire crowd gathered to celebrate a religious festival were jumping and dancing to Abhishek's Beatboxing. And post the performance, Abhishek was gifted a “prize” money of Rs.200 in an enclosed envelope. It is at this very moment that Abhishek realised the creative & financial independence he was craving for at that young age, and he knew then, that he had something powerful, and he decided to take up his hobby as his profession. He went back home with his envelope of Rs.200 and gave it to his mother, Amrutha Bhaskar, like a typical south Indian Kid. And this was prior to his 10th standard board exams, so Abhishek blames Beatboxing to this day for getting 75% ( “only” as society accepts only 90% and above ) in his final board exams…and thus began the journey of Abhishek as a Beatboxer.

Abhishek has been Beatboxing professionally since 2012, and has over 800+ shows as of 2020. He has performed across India at some of India's leading Music Festivals, College Fests as well as Corporate events. He is also the first Beatboxer to be featured in a project for UNITED NATIONS wherein he had the opportunity to lend his Beatboxing samples to a track containing singers from many countries across the planet to promote International Peace. He is also the first Indian Beatboxer to be featured in a concept-commercial for Pepsi Co. He was also the Ex-Brand Ambassador for International Brands like ADIDAS ORIGINALS & JBL. He has conducted the biggest BEATBOXING Workshop in India in 2017 - Alongside Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, as well as another workshop in 2018 in VR Mall,Bangalore, alongside Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle and 2000+ participants across India.

He has also had the oppurtunity to collaborate and open for various artists across the planet, some of which are:

Abhishek was also awarded the Young Achiever award in 2017 by the A3 Foundation in Chandigarh for his notable work both in the field of Beatboxing and Architecture.

In his 2017 TEDx talk, titled “The LIFE OF AN ARTIST” he shared his experience of how he got into Beatboxing and Architecture & how he had to manage both Beatboxing and Architecture and how this helped him manage time efficiently. He also dicsussed about some of his then, ongoing research projects and also hinted at how he would be starting a design company ( now called DERT Lab ).

Abhishek Bhaskar always had the creative bug since he was a kid. His earliest recollection of him designing a house was when him and his family were on a trip to chennai, and at a beach there ( Marina Beach ), he started scribbling a house in the sand and made a simple house for his future. Later, when he was a young boy, he sketched a “dream house” for himself, and has been preserved to this day, by his mother, Amrutha Bhaskar. Ever since he was a boy, he wanted to do something different, something that makes him happy and helps others around him.

After completing his 12th standard ( 2nd PUC ), he decided to take up Architecture upon the recommendation of a friend, who assured him “there is no mathematics in Architecture”. Abhishek, who was curious to try something different, never knew there was a field called Architecture, which was NOT engineering. He felt as though he had discovered something which he was always on the lookout for, and at this moment, he was reminded of the fact that he had once drawn a house for himself as a kid, and he could get to do that as a profession!. This mini-EUREKA moment, lead him to look into Architecture, and prepare for the entrance exams, as well as convince his parents that he wanted to do something apart from engineering.

After finishing his Bachelors in Architecture at Dayananda Sagar School of Architecture in 2017, he embarked on a new chapter to create something that would help him explore his cravings for creative living, as well as help the student community in Bangalore and across India with skill sets, tools and techniques to help them embrace and prepare for the future wave of automation, and help them get ahead of the curve. Thus, one night in early 2018, around 2 AM in the night, as always, Abhishek was sleepless, and thinking of the key elements where he could contribute. Design, Research, Technology & finally, Education. And at that very moment, DERT Lab was born. D.E.R.T = Design, Education, Research & Technology. He instantly got up from his bed and made a quick logo to visualize his idea,so that he doesn't forget this vision in the morning. Hence on Feb 16th, 2018 DERT Lab was now official.

DERT Lab started off small, and composed in terms of it's growth. Abhishek Bhaskar started off conducting Parametric Design workshops as early as 2017 ( His 5th Year of B.Arch, prior to his graduation ) at colleges like SIT Tumkur, BMS-COA and other colleges. Upon DERT Lab's entry, Abhishek was conducting workshops across India in the field of Parametric Architecture, Computational Design, Augmented Reality and other important streams for Architecture & Design students.
