Austin Butler: 5 facts to know about the star to play Elvis Presley in his biopic

Austin Butler is all set to step into the king's blue suede shoes. Baz Luhrmann, the Australian director of the untitled Elvis Presley biopic made the announcement on July 16th. Tom Hanks will play Tom Parker, who was Presley’s  manager.

1. Austin began his acting career when he was 13.

Austin Butler, born on August 17, 1991, in Anaheim, California, found his start in the entertainment industry at the age of thirteen, when he was approached by a representative from an acting management company at the Orange County Fair. The moment inspired him to take acting seriously and shortly after he started taking acting lessons.

2. Austin is into music

He began playing the guitar at the age of thirteen and piano at sixteen. He loves collecting guitars. 

Playing the part of Elvis should come naturally to him.

3. He is currently dating the former Disney star Vanessa Hudgens.

They have been dating since 2011. The two met on Disney Channel’s High School Musical set while Vanessa was dating her co-star, Zac Efron. She and Efron broke up in 2010. 

Austin and Vanessa made their relationship official at Coachella 2012. 

4. Austin has worked in numerous well-run television shows

His got his first major, regular job as a background actor playing the role of Lionel Scranton for two seasons on Nickelodeon's Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. In May 2007, he landed a guest starring role on the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana playing Derek Hanson opposite Miley Cyrus. In 2010 and 2011, he guest-starred on CSI: Miami and CSI: NY.

5. Austin has also performed on Broadway

He made his Broadway debut playing Don Parritt, the "lost boy" in Eugene O’Neill's The Iceman Cometh. The New Yorker's Pulitzer Prize-winning theater critic Hilton Als said of him:

Although there are many performers [on stage]…There is only one actor, and his name is Austin Butler.

A huge compliment considering Denzel Washington was also on the stage.
