Biography

Yuanfan Yang (杨远帆; born 1997 in Edinburgh) began playing the piano aged 6 and went on to pass the ABRSM Grade 8 with distinction at the age of 8, after which he gained the DipABRSM diploma aged 10. Yang currently studies with Murray McLachlan at Chetham's School of Music.
Yang has won first prizes in a number of competitions including the 2010 RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition (under 19 category), 2009 Manchester International Piano Competition for Young Pianists (age 16 and under category), 2009 Chetham’s Yamaha Piano Competition and the 2009 Ryszard Bakst Chopin Prize (junior division). As the youngest of all finalists in the 2010 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, his performances earned him the Walter Todds Bursary. Yang also won both his category prize and the sole overall prize of the 2010 EPTA UK Piano Competition.
Yang is also a prolific composer. His piano composition 'Waves' won his category 1st Prize and the Overall Award in the EPTA UK Composition Competition 2011. This piece was also awarded as one of the Highly-Commended compositions in the BBC Proms Composers Competition 2011 and was broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
