Swapan Banerjee Purnapatra

Swapan Banerjee Purnapatra is an IPS officer (SPS). After the acceptance of his nomination from West Bengal Police Service to Indian Police Service,he was allotted the seniority of the 1997-IPS batch. Since his joining the police service in 1984 he has been serving in many sensitive positions in the capacity of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Additional Superintendent of Police, Commandant of State Armed Police, district Police Super and presently posted as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Intelligence Branch, West Bengal.

Born on 10 September 1953 in Chinsura town of Hooghly in West Bengal,he is the second child of Late Kanailal Banerjee Purnapatra and Subarnalatika Devi. He has seven siblings and he has been married to Mrs. Tripti Banerjee Purnapatra and has two sons.

Started his professional career as a school teacher. In the year 1980,he was appointed as the Supervisor of Ghatal Co-operative Land Development Bank. Thereafter, he qualified in the West Bengal Public Service Examination (Clerical) and was initially appointed in the Office of Legal Remembrancer, following which he worked in the Agriculture Department at Writer’s Buildings.After that he qualified in the WBCS-1982 securing the 1st position in his group.He was awarded the IPS seniority of 1997.He has also been awarded the Seva Padak in the year 2006.

Besides being a successful police officer, he is known for his cultural inclinations and philanthropic activities. He is noted for his singing abilities.He has many music albums published,mostly from Gathani company to his credit. He has written substantial number of poems and folk songs and recently some of those works have culminated to a compilation titled "Purnapatre-r Nirbachito Kobita", published by Ananda Prakashan, Kolkata (ISBN 978-93-81683-05-7). His humanitarian works include organizing donations to defray the educational necessities of needy students as well as arranging sustainance for the poor.He has organized several eye and medical camps to increase police public relation and foster mutual friendship and trust.
