Biography

Sharon Martina Donnery (born 1 November 1972) is an Irish economist who has served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland since June 2019 and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland since March 2016.

Career

Educated at University College Dublin, Donnery started with the Central Bank of Ireland in 1996. She was the first woman to be appointed to the role of Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Ireland.

In 2018, she was shortlisted as one of two contenders nominated by MEPs to head the euro zone's bank supervisory operation, the Single Supervisory Mechanism, eventually losing out to Andrea Enria.

Donnery was one of five shortlisted candidates for the post of governor but was not selected. However, she was appointed by the Central Bank Commission to the role of acting governor from 1 June 2019 to 31 August 2019, when Gabriel Maklouf will assume the position of governor; in the meantime, she will hold the full powers of the office.
