Biography

Rhythm D (real name David Weldon) is an American hip-hop music producer and beatmaker known for his work on Eazy-E and Dr. Dre albums in the 90s. During his career, he has worked with many renowned artists such as PaperboySnoop DoggMack 10Bone Crusher, Ying Yang Twins, and Scarface

Life and career

Weldon grew up in South Central Los Angeles.

In 1992, Weldon produced rapper Paperboy's famous 1992 hit "Ditty," for which Paperboy earned a Grammy nomination for best rap solo artist. As his career was shaping up in the West Coast hip hop scene, Weldon got entangled in a feud between Eazy-E and Dr. Dre. He was originally signed with Death Row Records but left the label shortly before the release of Dr. Dre's legendary 1992 album The Chronic, which contained a diss track targeting Eazy-E.

Weldon instead joined Eazy-E's Ruthless Records, become the label's in house exclusive producer, a role that Dr. Dre played until he left over a financial dispute and allied with former bodyguard Suge Knight. According to Weldon, Eazy-E was so impressed by his beats that he declared, “You rollin’ with Ruthless.” In 1993, with Ruthless Records, Weldon produced Eazy-E's "Real M*********g G's," a track dissing Dr. Dre in response to his diss track. The track went 4x platinum, peaked at 42 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at 2 on US Hot Rap Songs (Billboard.)

Because of his involvement with the Ruthless/Death Row dispute, he had to hire a bodyguard for himself. Disillusioned with the West Coast scene, Weldon then shifted his focus towards Atlanta hip-hop scene and traveled there frequently, working with the local hip-hop acts such as Bone Crusher and DJ Nabs.

After the death of his sister from cancer, he moved to Atlanta permanently in 2008.

In 2014, he partnered with rapper Ben Familiar (aka Ben Shlesinger) and launched an entertainment company named Red Ram Entertainment, in Atlanta.

Besides his G-funk sound, Weldon is also focused on the contemporary club music and is working on a compilation of EDM music from artists that aren't normally associated with the genre, including Ying Yang Twins, Scarface, and Musiq Soulchild.

In 2016, Weldon was seen in NWA & Eazy-E: Kings of Compton, a documentary that tracks life and times of Eazy-E and NWA. Other stars to appear in the documentary included Dr. DreDJ YellaJulio GIce CubeMister Cartoon, and DJ Quik.

Recent works

In one of his recent works, Weldon produced Louisiana rapper Von's Floatin, in the summer of 2019. In 2020, he released an album titled "Ruthless Family: Disciples of E" featuring various artists that Eazy-E collaborated with during 1992-1995, including Sylk E Fyne, Diamond Icegirl, Cold 187umBG Knocc Out, Tweed Cadillac, DrestaLayzie BoneKokane, and Baby Eazy-E among others.
