Biography

Rahul Jandial, M.D., Ph.D. is an American, dual trained Neurosurgeon and Scientist at City of Hope in Los Angeles, a hospital for cancer treatment designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Jandial is an associate professor with expertise in the surgical treatment of cancers of the nervous system. His research focuses on brain tumors that arise from the spread of breast cancer cells into the brain (metastases). After completing his neurosurgical training and doctorate at the University of California, San Diego he was accepted into fellowship at Stanford University and recruited as faculty at Harvard University. He chose City of Hope to launch his career and has been there since 2009.

Career

Neurosurgeon (M.D.)

Dr. Jandial earned his B.A. in molecular and cell biology from the University of California, Berkeley — his M.D. from the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles — and his Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). Previously, Dr. Jandial worked as chief resident neurosurgeon at UCSD Medical Center. He was also a clinical instructor for the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Currently he is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery serving as a member of the faculty at City of Hope Department of Neurosurgery and Beckman Research Institute.

Scientist (Ph.D.)

Dr. Jandial obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree from University of California at San Diego (UCSD) in 2008. Dr. Jandial’s published research has appeared in journals such as Neurosurgery, Nature Medicine and Proceeding from the National Academy of Sciences. He has authored 10 books on topics ranging from neurosurgery to cancer biology and neuroscience.

Humanitarian / Educator

Dr. Jandial is involved in community service through teaching, mentoring, and humanitarian efforts. Currently he teaches at USC Department of Biological Sciences to teach undergraduate students about careers in medicine and science. At the City of Hope Graduate School of Biological Sciences, he mentors students toward earning their Ph.D. in cancer biology. He is the founder and director of International Neurosurgical Children’s Association, which improves the standard of brain surgery provided to disadvantaged children in developing nations. INCA works with international missions and has renovated neurosurgical care in hospitals across Central and South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe.

Dr. Jandial is a contributor at KTLA-TV and ESPN in Los Angeles. He hosted Brain Surgery Live on Nat Geo with Bryant Gumbell and is on FOX Superhuman as a panelist. Brian Lowry, Chief TV critic for Variety, called him the "world's most dashing neurosurgeon" in a highly positive review.
