Biography

Daniyal Mirza (11 September 1572 – 8 April 1604) was an Imperial Prince of the Mughal Empire who served as the Viceroy of Deccan. He was the third son of Emperor Akbar the Great and the brother of the Emperor Jahangir. His two sons were executed by Shah Jahan on 23 Jan 1658.

Daniyal was born on 11 September 1572.When Daniyal was born, Akbar allowed him to be brought up by Raja Bharmal's wife in Amer as a gesture of honour to the raja's family for a period of 6 months as Akbar had an important expedition in Gujarat. He was made the Subahdar (Governor) of the Deccan from 21 April 1601 to April 1604. He was appointed to an Imperial mansab of 7,000 soldiers. He had nine wives:

  • a daughter of Sultan Khwaja 'Abdu'l-Azim Naqshabandi (She died of cancer)
  • a daughter of Qulij Khan Andajani, Subahdar of Kabul, Punjab, Gujarat and Afghanistan (She was mother of Prince Basinghar)
  • a granddaughter of Rao Maldeo Rathore, Ruler of Marwar, mother of Prince Tamuras and Hohsang. After Daniyal died she returned to Marwar. She was also relative of Daniyal Taj Bibi Biqis Makani The wife of Jahangir
  • a daughter of Abdul Rahim Khan-I-Khana, the Subahdar of Gujarat
  • a daughter of Raja (King) Dalpat of Ujjain (she was imprisoned by Jahangir until his death)
  • a daughter of Ibrahim Adil Shah II, the Sultan of Bijapur (she died 1641)

Shahryar's forces were defeated by those loyal to his half-brother, Prince Khurram. On Jumada-l awwal 2, 1037 AH (December 30, 1627), Prince Khurram was proclaimed as the Emperor Shah Jahan I at Lahore, and on Jumada-l awwal 26, 1037 AH (January 23, 1628) upon his orders, Dawar Bakhsh, his brother Garshasp, Shahryar, and Tahmuras and Hoshang, sons of the deceased Prince Daniyal, were all put to death by Asaf Khan, who was ordered by Shah Jahan to send them "out of the world", which he faithfully carried out. His son, Prince Hoshang, was married to Hoshmand Banu Begum, the daughter of Prince Dawar.

Mother's Identity

Prince Daniyal's mother was a royal concubine of Akbar. She died in 1596.
