Biography

Peter Gloviczki (MD, FACS) is a Joe M. and Ruth Roberts Professor of Surgery (emeritus) of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Early life and education

Gloviczki was born in Budapest, Hungary. Initially, his job was a magician. At age 14 he was already winning nationally televised talent show by using magic skills and smile. His high school years were spent with his five brothers at the Benedictine High School of Pannonhalma. After graduation from high school, he attended Semmelweis University where he was mentored by Lajos Soltesz who trained him in general and vascular surgery, until he graduated from it in 1972 with an MD degree.

In 1973, Gloviczki was a recipient of the first prize from the Society of American Magicians and then became silver medalist at the World Championship of Magic in Paris in 1973 and gold medalist at the Grand Prix of World Magic in Tokyo five years later.

Career

Taking advantage of his skills in magic, Gloviczki managed to emigrate from Hungary during the Iron Curtain by telling officials that he will go out to compete in various magic competitions such as in 1973 at the World Championships of Magic where he took second place. In 1981 he landed a scholarship to Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and since 1987 to 2000 was its research director. Since 2000 and 2002 respectively he was a Division Chair and Director of the Gonda Vascular Center at Mayo Clinic which positions ended in 2010.

In 2016, prior to his retirement he performed his 10,000th surgery one of which was on Vice President Dick Cheney in 2005. Since July 2016 he serves as an editor-in-chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. The same year he also co-authored the first edition of the Handbook of Venous Disorders with James S. T. Yao.

During his time in Mayo Clinic, he had authored 419 full-length peer-reviewed articles, more than 200 book chapters, editorials and reviews and has given over 600 presentations. He mentored 85 categorical vascular surgery fellows and 25 research fellows.

Memberships

Since 1990, Peter Gloviczki is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and in 2011 became president-elect of the Society for Vascular Surgery, becoming president two years later for a single one-year term. From 2007 to 2008 he served as president of the World Federation of Vascular Societies. He also was a Past President of the American Venous Forum and is a member of the Vascular Birthmark Foundation at which he treats Klippel–Trénaunay syndrome and port-wine stains.

Awards

Dr. Gloviczki is a recipient of many awards, including the Max Ratschow Medal (2016).

Personal life

Peter Gloviczki was married to Marta Gloviczki, with whom he had two children; Julia and Peter. His son, Peter, is with cerebral palsy. After emigrating to the United States, he divorced Marta and married Dr. Monika Lecomte Gloviczki who is also an artist and a doctor by a profession. Together they take care of their children from the first wife along with Michael (son from second marriage); and a son-in-law, Benjamin. Since his hobby is magic, he performed tricks at the SVS Political Action Committee reception during the Vascular Annual Meeting in 2017 and at the Mayo Alumni Association during the Mayo Clinic's 150th anniversary in 2016.
