Michael Williams is an American politician and businessman. First elected to the Senate in 2014, after defeating longtime Republican incumbent State Senator Jack Murphy in a runoff election. Williams won the race with 66% of the vote to Murphy's 34%. He serves as a Republican member of the Georgia State Senate from Senate District 27, covering the majority of Forsyth County.
Williams largely self-funded his campaign, contributing over $300,000 of his own money toward the race.
Prior to running for office, Michael Williams had no previous political experience. He made his living running a franchise chain of 18 Sports Clips hair salons for men. He sold these the year prior to announcing his campaign.
Williams was the first Georgia elected official to endorse Donald J. Trump for President. His political consultant, Seth Weathers, also has close ties to the Trump campaign. Weathers briefly served as Donald Trump's State Director in Georgia. Williams is a Latter-day Saint and used this fact to campaign for Trump in Utah.
Williams is rumored to be contemplating a 2018 run for Georgia Secretary of State. The current Georgia Secretary of State, Brian Kemp, is very likely to enter the 2018 race for Governor, leaving the Secretary of State seat open.
