Biography

Mark Edward Martinez Striegl (born June 23, 1988) is a Filipino-American mixed martial artist, currently signed with ONE FC and fighting out of Evolve MMA in Singapore. In November 2014, Yahoo Sports named him one of the hottest prospects in Asian MMA. He grew up in Tokyo, Japan and started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with his brother before making the transition to MMA while he was at university in the United States. He has fought in numerous countries, and currently lives in Baguio in the Philippines.

Background

Striegl was following his older brothers footsteps by competing in Taekwondo and Wrestling before he began Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai and eventually Mixed martial arts. He recently fights for Wajitsu Keishukai among some of Japan's toughest fighters.

Mixed martial arts career

Striegl made his MMA debut at Total Combat 24 in San Diego in 2009, defeating Andy Jewett by rear naked choke. After moving back to Asia he fought for PRO Fighting in Taiwan in 2010 defeating top Korean fighter Bae Young Kwon by unanimous decision.

Next he fought for the URCC defeating Crisanto Pitpitunge by rear naked choke in the first round of their fight at URCC 3, it was his first fight in the Philippines. After that he fought in Saipan and won via rear naked choke against Giovanni Sablan at Trench Warz 14.

In 2011 he signed with Legend FC and entered the semi finals of their featherweight tournament to face Japanese fighter Yusuke Kawanago. Striegl won the fight via split decision to advance to the final of the featherweight tournament.

After defeating Kawanago he returned to PRO Fighting for a second time to take on Pan Wen Shi in a fight which he won by rear naked choke in the opening round. His second fight for Legend FC was against unbeaten New Zealander Ev Ting, Striegl had originally been scheduled to face Yeong Gwang Choi at Legend FC 7 but the opponent was changed at the last minute due to injury.

In January 2012 he was named as number six on a list of the Filipinos most likely to make it into the UFC by Bloody Elbow.

Instead of facing Choi, Striegl took on unbeaten New Zealander Ev Ting and won by rear naked choke in the opening round, the fifth time he had won using that particular submission.

In February, 2012 Striegl signed for DARE Championship in Thailand. His first fight for them was announced as being against Marko Huusansaari at DARE Championship 2/12 on June 17. He defeated Huusansaari via an arm bar in the second round of the fight.

URCC Comeback

In April 28, 2012 Striegl made a comeback to the URCC to fight dangerous striker Alcer Lozada. He stayed unbeaten by defeating Lozada via rear-naked-choke in the first round.

Pacific Xtreme Combat

On September 1, 2012 Striegl made a very impressive PXC debut against Robert Wusstig by winning in first round via Scarf Hold Armlock.

On November 17, 2012 Striegl faced the PXC Lightweight Champion Harris Sarmiento in a non-title featherweight bout. Mark Striegl upset Sarmiento by submitting him via Scarf Hold Armlock early in the first round.

ONE Championship

Striegl left PXC in April 2014 and was inactive for much of the year. He made his return on October 25, 2014, against Kaiwhare Kara-France at MIMMA - Malaysian Invasion 2, quickly defeating his opponent by rear-naked choke in the first round.

In early December 2014, Striegl signed with Singaporean-based promotion ONE FC, recognised as the biggest one in Asia.

Striegel made his ONE debut at ONE Championship: Valor of Champions on April 24, 2015 against Casey Suire. He won the fight via submission in the first round.
