Biography

Margaret E. Jacobs is a Native American artist and member of the Akwesanse Mohawk tribe, known for her sculptures, jewelry, and sketching. She has stated that she draws inspiration from her culture and upbringing.

She has stated that she values natural and synthetic objects and that she is inspired by buildings in the United States, as to her they are a reminder of Mohawk ironworkers who left their tribes and communities to help build structures. Most of Jacobs woks has been based around the history of the Mohawks, her cultural heritage, and stories. Jacobs is known for her sculptures and jewelry.

Early life and education

Margaret E. Jacobs was born into the Akwesanse Mohawk tribe on January 31, 1963 in Ogdensburg, New York. She has described her family as being "hands on" and stated that she began to make things from an early age.

She attended the Ogdensburg Free Academy, from which she graduated in 2004. She then went on to attend Dartmouth College, where she received her Bachelors in Visual Arts and received the school's Perspectives design award. Jacobs is inspired by the artist Sandy Skoglund inspiring confidence within her pieces.

Steel Medicine

Steel Medicine is one of Jacobs exhibitions that is open from June 8, 2019 to April 26, 2020 in the Boise Art Museum, in Boise Idaho. The pieces that are displayed are steel sculptures.Jacobs mentions it speaks on adaptation and cultural identity.

Old Growth Series 2019

In 2019 Jacobs had designed the Old Growth series, it references influential plants and objects that are found in nature.Jacobs mentions these sculptures contains storytelling elements from traditional Mohawk series.Jacobs further mentions the sculpture show medicinal plants with tools that represent the twentieth century Mohawk workers.

Shedding Armor

A steel sculpture resembling a turtle's shell, made to resemble the raw beauty of an object. Jacobs' use of base metals to prevent chips and scratches and the use of powder coating to provide raw natural colors to the shell.
