Biography

Elizabeth S. Hager is an American politician. She is a former member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.

Education

Hager attended Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. Later, she earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of New Hampshire, in 1979.

Career

Hager was in public service for almost three decades. She was first elected to the New Hampshire Legislature in 1972 and served thirteen terms until 2008 (re-elected twelve times until losing re-election in 2008.) She was a Concord City Councilor for a decade, serving as the city's mayor from 1988 to 1990. 

In 1974, as a member of the Constitutional Convention, she sponsored the Equal Rights Amendment which became part of our constitution in March of 1975.

Since 1996 she had served as Executive Director of the United Way of Merrimack County in Concord. Before that, she was involved as a volunteer, including roles as both President of the Board and Campaign Chair at United Way. She is a Director of the Lincoln Variable Insurance Products Trust and was the executive vice president of Granite United Way from 2010 to 2011.

 

Hager is a moderate Republican who endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election due to his pro-choice stance. During her career, Hager has sponsored legislation protecting abortion rights.

She has served on the Boards of many organizations, including the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute, the Concord YMCA, Concord Child and Family Services, the Friends Program, and NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire. She founded and chaired the New Hampshire Women's Lobby and served on the New Hampshire Commission on the Status of Women. 

Hager had been mentioned as a possible appointment to the United States Senate after Judd Gregg was nominated United States Secretary of Commerce.

Personal life

Hager and her husband, Dennis, have been married for 53 years and have two married daughters and four grandchildren.
