Biography

Jessica Louise Nelson (born June 14, 1991) is a British singer/songwriter. She is a member of the British girl group Little Mix, with Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Perrie Edwards.

Early life

Jesy Nelson was born Jessica Louise Nelson on June 14, 1991, in Romford, London, to Janice White and John Nelson. She has an older sister, Jade (born 1986), and two brothers, Jonathan (born 1989) and Joseph (born 1992).

Her parents divorced when she was very young; she grew up with her mother, sister, and brothers. Due to the divorce of her parents, Nelson moved more than twelve times.

She attended Jo Richardson Community School in Dagenham, England, as well as at Abbs Cross Academy and Arts College, Hornchurch, England, where she studied drama and music. Nelson stood out as a student, noted by her teachers for being dedicated to drama and music. She also studied theater at Sylvia Young Theater School in London.

Career

Nelson started dancing at the age of 8. At 12, she took dance lessons at Danceworks Studios.

She shot to fame in 2011, aged 19, when she participated in the eighth series of the UK version of The X Factor. She auditioned with Jazmine Sullivan's song Bust Your Windows. During the show, she eventually got placed in Rhythmix, an all-female, four-piece group with three other contestants: Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Perrie Edwards. In October 2011, the group changed their name to “Little Mix,” following a copyright dispute with a Brighton-based children's music charity of the same name.

On 11 December, Little Mix were announced the winners of The X Factor –– the first time a group had won the British version of the show and the second (of five) in the worldwide franchise.

Before participating in The X Factor, Nelson worked behind the bar at a pub in Dagenham, Essex.

In the Media

Nelson was bullied on social media after her appearance on The X Factor. She suffered from depression for a period due to the incessant harassment from the online trolls.

Her story was noticed and it was the subject of a BBC documentary titled Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out. The documentary, which aired on 12 September 2019 on BBC One, explored body image, mental health, and online abuse. In the documentary, she revealed that after the online abuse regarding her weight, she attempted to commit suicide in 2013. She also spoke of how she became almost "obsessed" with reading negative comments about herself.

The documentary brought Nelson praise from many celebrities including Charlotte Crosby, Stacey Dooley, and Emily Atack who tweeted that the film should be shown in schools.

EastEnders actress Tilly Keeper said Nelson's story was "necessary in today's technological and social media crazed climate".

In November 2019, Nelson received the Gold award for "Odd One Out" at the OnSide Awards. The documentary also won the Factual Entertainment award at the 2020 National Television Awards.

Personal life

Nelson was in a relationship with Jordan Banjo from May 2012 to June 2014. Banjo is a British dancer and a member of dance troupe Diversity, which won won the third series of Britain's Got Talent.

In July 2014, she began dating Jake Roche, frontman for the band "Push Baby" (formerly Rixton.) The two got engaged the following year, in July 2015. Roche proposed her in the middle of a Little Mix soundcheck in 2015. Singer Ed Sheeran surprised the couple with their favorite song, "Tenerife Sea". Nelson and Roche announced their break up in November 2016.

Since early 2019, Nelson has been dating Love Island contestant Chris Hughes.
