Biography

Jeremy Mushlin (a.k.a. "Mush One" or Mush1) is an American trumpeter, composer, engineer, producer, sound system operator, and radio host who has played in reggae, ska, calypso and rocksteady bands, including The Slackers, The Scorchers, Fireproof, The Hungry March Band, Top Shotta Band, Red Hook Warriorz, and The Rocksteady Seven.

Life and career

Mushlin moved to New York in 1993 to join the well-known ska band The Slackers as a trumpet player, and also served the band's composer, arranger, and vocalist. He recored four albums with The Slackers for Hellcat Records:

In 1997, Mushlin performed on a reggae album titled Version City (Stubborn Records) alongside King Django (trombone, flute, harmonica, melodica, percussion), Victor "Lord Sluggo" Ruggiero (vocals, piano, organ, percussion), Buford O'Sullivan (trombone), Al Mooney, Anna Milat-Meyer, Matt Malles, Paul Ackerman, and Pierre Romain (bass), Victor Rice(double bass, organ), Christoff Lavergne, Eddie Ocampo, James Blanck, and Michael McDermott (drums), Agent Jay, Dave Hahn, Don Louie, and Patrick Carayannis (guitar), Dave Hillyard and Eric Singer (saxophone), etc.

Around 1999-2000, Mushlin left The Slackers and performed on New York City-based ska/jazz band The Rocksteady Seven's 1999 album Playtime alongside Dave Hillyard (saxophone), Victor Ruggiero (vocals, piano), Alex Desert (vocals), Jon Natchez (baritone saxophone), Eddie Ocampo (drums), Roy Campbell Jr. (trumpet), Cal Massey (written by), Idris Muhammad (written by), etc.

In 2001, Mushlin collaborated with Jamaican dancehall DJ and singer Sister Nancy to record "Sister Nancy Meets Fireproof" on Special Potato Records. He then played with Hungry March Band, recording the albums "On The Waterfront" in 2003 and "Critical Brass" in 2004, with Jason Candler (alto saxophone), Quince Marcum (drums), Julie Hair(percussions), Sara Valentine (percussions), Kris Anton (percussions), Anders Nelson (snare, tom tom), Sasha Sumner(soprano saxophone), Joe Keady and John Barker (sousaphone), Emily Fairey (saxophone), Sebastian Isler (trombone), Atsushi Tsumura (trumpet), Cousin Johnny Heyenga (trumpet), etc.

In 2005, Mushlin and ex-The Slackers drummer Luis (Zulu) Zuluaga formed a Brooklyn-based traditional ska/reggae group The Scorchers, releasing their debut album Stuntin' on Jump Records. The other members were Alicia Williams (vocals, the daughter of Sonny Bradshaw Orchestra's vocalist Granville Phinnof), Paul Defiglia (upright bass), and Ben Shanley (trombone) (ex-Fireproof and Red Hook Warriorz.) The album carried 17 songs, including an updated version of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Walk On By" and Bob Marley's "Play Play Play".

In 2008, Mushlin wrote and produced "Bad Gyal Inna Dance" album with Lady Ann/Barbara Ann Smith ("Informer" fame) on Jump Up! Records.

Since 2010, Mushlin has been leading Brooklyn-based ensemble Top Shotta Band featuring Screechy Dan, a 10-piece roots/ska/dub group. In 2013, they released the eponymous album on Al Paragus. In September 2020, the group released their second album Spread Love on Liquidator Music.

Mushlin also owns a recording studio/record label office named Al Paragus Headquarters, where he has also produced music for a wide range of Jamaican artists, including Lady Ann/Barbara Ann Smith, Carlton Livingston, Junior Cat, and Sammy Dread.

Personal life

Mushlin is based in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York.
