Biography

Jahangir Khan Tareen (Urdu: جہانگیر خان ترین; born 4 July 1953) is a Pakistani politician and businessman who currently served as the Secretary General of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). A leader of the PTI, Tareen was born in Comilla and educated at the Forman Christian College, Lahore, later attending the University of North Carolina. Prior to entering politics, he had been a lecturer, and a banker.
He began his political career as the member of the National Assembly of Pakistan in 2002. He served as special adviser on agriculture and social sector initiatives to then Chief Minister of Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi before being appointed as the Federal Minister for Industries and Production from 2004 to 2005 in the Shaukat Aziz ministry. In 2011, he joined PTI and was made its General Secretary.
Tareen has been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since 2002 and considered as one of the wealthiest politician of Pakistan.

Early life and education

Tareen was born on 4 July 1953 in Comilla, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He graduated from Forman Christian College, Lahore in 1971 and received MBA degree from the University of North Carolina, in 1974.

He is an entrepreneur by profession and prior to entering in politics, he has also been a lecturer, and a banker. He headed the Punjab Task Force on Agriculture from 1997 to 1999 and the Punjab Task Force on Wheat Procurement and Marketing from 2001 to 2002.

Tareen is considered as one of the wealthiest politician in Pakistan with assets worth around Rs1.18 billion who owns thousands of acres of farmland and some of the largest sugar mills in Pakistan. He owns a private plane in which Imran Khan often travels. He inherited his first sugar mill in Rahim Yar Khan from his father-in-law Makhdoom Hasan Mehmood, who was a politician in the 1970s and 1980s.

Political career

In an interview with Newsweek Pakistan, Tareen said "he doesn't belong to a political family, but he married into a political family". According to Tareen, his brother-in-law was mayor of Rahim Yar Khan, but he couldn't participate in the Pakistani general election, 2002 because of the degree issue. so he himself decided to enter into politics.

He began his political career in 2002 after he was elected as the member of the National Assembly of Pakistan in Pakistani general elections, 2002 representing Rahim Yar Khan on the ticket of Pakistan Muslim League (Q).

He served as special adviser on agriculture and social sector initiatives to then chief minister of Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. In August 2004, he was inducted into federal cabinet and was made Federal Minister for Industries and Production in the Shaukat Aziz ministry where he remained until 2007.

In Pakistani general election, 2008, Tareen was re-elected as the member of the National Assembly for the second time from Constituency NA-195 on the seat of Pakistan Muslim League (F).

He was the the parliamentary leader of PML-F in the National Assembly. Later he formed a forward block known as the "Tareen's group" which comprised several seasoned politicians. In 2011, He said he was to launch his own political party consisting of politicians free from corruption charges but later in November 2011, he joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf along with a number of associates saying that his vision was similar to PTI.

In September 2013, Imran Khan appointed Jahangir Tareen as the Secretary General of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to replace the previous Secretary General Pervaiz Khattak who became the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after the Pakistani general election, 2013.

In Pakistani general election, 2013, Tareen was re-elected as the member of the National Assembly for the third time from Constituency NA-154 (Lodhran) on the seat of PTI.

In August 2015, he retained its membership in the National Assembly after commission of Punjab election tribunal announced its verdict in favour of Tareen over a petition filed by the former secretary general of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) against alleged rigging in constituency Lodhran during the 2013 elections.

Reportedly, Tareen has heavily invested in Lodhran.

Controversies

Critics of Tareen alleged that his sugar business thrived during the Pervez Musharraf rule when he was a the Minister for Industries and Production for five years. There are also many allegations of money laundering and loans defaulted against him.

Tareen is also known to finance protests and anti-government rallies of PTI.

In 2016, Tareen admitted that he had an offshore company in the United Kingdom registered under the names of his children.
