Biography
James Loring Johnson (born 1945) is an American painter and farmer.
James Loring Johnson was born in 1945 to Esther Underwood and John Seward Johnson I (July 14, 1895 – May 23, 1983), a longtime executive and director of Johnson & Johnson, an American multinational pharmaceutical corporation. Johnson & Johnson was founded by John's father Robert Wood Johnson I and his two brothers James Wood Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson.
James has a sister Jennifer Underwood Johnson and four step-siblings from his father's marriage to Ruth Dill (the sister of actress Diana Douglas): Mary Lea Johnson Richards (a Broadway producer, 1926—1990), Elaine Johnson, John Seward Johnson II (also as an artist, 1930—2020), and Diana Melville Johnson Firestone (a businesswoman, 1932—2023).
At one point, James became estranged from his father and didn't see him for several years. In 1975, he married Gretchen Wittenborn, sister of screenwriter and novelist Dirk Wittenborn. They lived in East Hamptons in New York. They had two sons and four daughters. One of their sons, James Wittenborn Johnson, is a celebrated documentary filmmaker. In 2003, he directed Born Rich—a documentary featuring the children born into rich and famous families, including himself and people such as Ivanka Trump (daughter of Donald Trump), Georgina Bloomberg (daughter of Michael Bloomberg), Samuel Irving Newhouse Jr. (son of publisher Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr.), and Cody Franchetti (son of Italian actress Angelica Ippolito).
