Biography

Irena Santor (born 9 December 1934 in Papowo Biskupie, Poland) is a retired Polish singer. She spent the first years of her life in Solec Kujawski. She graduated a Glazier Technical and Vocational school in Polanica Zdrój and pursued her vocal career afterwards. She was promoted by Zdzisław Górzyński, who recommended her to Tadeusz Sygietyński, director and founder of the Mazowsze - Polish State Folk Song and Dance Ensemble in 1951. In 1959 Santor left Mazowsze and started her solo career, making her debut in December that year. She toured European countries giving performances and recorded hits of the era, composed for her by composers Jerzy Wasowski, Wladyslaw Szpilman, Piotr Figiel and Wojciech Karolak. In 2000 her album Santor Cafe was released, including covers of songs by Burt Bacharach, Michel Legrand, and Hubert Giraud. She is now retired from the music stage but performs occasionally. Her greatest hits: Embarras, Powrócisz tu, Tych lat nie odda nikt, Maleńki znak, Na krzywym kole, Kamienne schodki, Odrobinę szczęścia w miłości, Pójde na stare miasto, Warszawa, ja i ty.

Her 1968 hit, Piosenka o sąsiedzie, is based on 1967's Nash Sosed by Edita Piekha. These songs have been sampled since by artists Jedi Mind Tricks and Ultrabeat (under the name "WTF?").
