Biography

Glayton Modise (13 August 1940 – 9 February 2016) was the succeeding leader of one of Africa's largest churches, the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. Modise was the only son of Reverend Frederick S Modise (1914–1998) who founded the IPHC in 1962. Modise was hand-picked and anointed leader by his father. He served the congregation from 1998 up until he died in February 2016.

Glayton's death in 2016 Johannesburg hospital following a short illness, plunged the Church his father had founded into a violent leadership battle between his son, Tshepiso (Tshepo) Modise, and a rival. The dispute was between rival supporters of Glaydon's two wives, Miriam and Nozipho.

Early life and education

Glayton spent the majority of his early life in Zuurbekom where the International Pentecostal Holiness Church is headquartered. Glayton Modise became the leader of the church after his father passed away in 1998. However the transition did not come smoothly as Glayton 's brother in law Bobo Modise also claimed to be the rightfull successor. It is said that a lot of people doubted Glayton 's ability to lead as he was known as someone who smoke and consumes alcohol even though the church was against all of this. With time the congregation started to appreciate him more, he went from being called the Comforter like his father into being called a human God( Modimo Motho). Glayton Modise built the youth centre for the church 's vibrant youth which has become a landmark in the church 's headquarters known as Silo in Zuurbekom. In the year 2007 in September, Glayton claimed to have seen a vision from God which instructed him to purchase a hill in Cape Town and rename the hill Mount Zion. The hill which was known as Blaauwberg hill was purchased at close to 100 Million rands and was renamed mount Zion as per the vision the Comforter has seen. Glayton Modise also continued with his father's legacy of having a bursary scheme, the bursary scheme was known as FS Modise bursary scheme but was later renamed to FSModiseMG bursary scheme. Glayton Modise was married to Mariam Modise(Mmapoloko) and Nozipho Tafu( Mmanohau). Glayton Modise only had children with the eldest wife Mmapoloko from whom Samuel and Frederick Modise were born. Glayton Modise passed away after a short illness on the 09th of February 2016 and was buried on 12 February 2016.
