Biography

Georg Niedermeier (born 26 February 1986) is a German footballer who last played as a defender for Melbourne Victory FC.

Career

Bayern Munich

Born in Munich, Niedermeier had played for Bayern Munich's reserve team since 2003, when he played his first match in a 0–0 draw against Augsburg on 18 October. Niedermeier previously played for SC Bogenhausen in a youth team before joining Bayern Munich at age nine.

In 2008, Niedermeier was given a captain's armband in an opening game of the season against FC Union Berlin, with a 2–1 victory. Also in the same year, he became involved with the first team, when he made his professional debut. He was an unused substitute for Bundesliga games against Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund in August 2008, and later against Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Champions League. In January 2009, Niedermeier signed a new deal, keeping him until 2012.

VfB Stuttgart

On 30 January 2009, he was loaned to VfB Stuttgart until June 2010, in order to gain first team experience. After the move, Niedermeier said that he had more opportunity to play here (Stuttgart). Two days later on 1 February 2009, Niedermeier made his debut in a Bundesliga match in a 2–0 win over Karlsruher SC. In his first half of his season at Stuttgart, he would make four more appearances due to suffering an ankle injury.

The following season, Niedermeier scored his first goal of his career with a header, in a 1–1 draw against Borussia Dortmund on 28 August 2009. In the Stuttgart's Champion League campaign, Niedermeier made his Champions League debut on Matchday five, in a 2–0 victory over Rangers, and another appearance in the last 16 second leg, in a 4–0 loss against defending champion Barcelona. During this season, Niedermeier made a few more appearances than the previous season. In the second half of the season on 11 February 2010, Niedermeier signed a contract with Stuttgart until June 2014 and moved permanently to VfB.

The following season was becoming more important for Niedermeier, as he was able to make more playing time in the first team, thanks to newly manager Bruno Labbadia and forming a central defense partnership with Mathieu Delpierre. Niedermeier scored his first goal of the season in a 7–0 thrash win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on 18 September 2010. During the season, Niedermeier made his Europa League debut in a 3–0 win over Young Boys. In the first round of Europa League in the first leg, Niedermeier once played in defensive midfield, after coming on as a substitute, in a 2–1 loss against Benfica. Eventually, Stuttgart would lose again, being eliminated from the Europa League.

The following season, Niedermeier continued to retain his first team status once again, having retained it in the previous season, despite suffering an injury at the start of the season. In a 2–2 draw against Werder Bremen on 23 September 2012, he played in a striker role after coming on for Shinji Okazaki and shortly after, he set up a goal for Cacau to make it 2–2, which was the final result. In the first game of the Europa League group stage, Niedermeier scored his first goal in a 2–2 draw against Steaua București. Niedermeier extended his contract with VfB Stuttgart on 9 January 2013 until June 2016.

Freiburg

On 31 August 2016, free agent Niedermeier signed a contract with Freiburg.

Melbourne Victory FC

Niedermeier joined Melbourne Victory FC after he completed his medical on 24 July 2018. During the 2018-2019 season Niedermeier picked up two concussions and tore his mid-foot ligament in duels after a good start of the campaign. He had 19 appearances in total and scored two goals. On 28 May 2019 Melbourne Victory FC announced that Niedermeier would depart the Club following the conclusion of the 2018/19 Hyundai A-League season. He left the Victory at the conclusion of the 2018–19 A-League season.

International career

Niedermeier played for Germany U17 national team, winning fourteen caps.
