Biography

Gary Stewart Schofield MNZM is the president of Global Concern, Inc. a non profit, charitable organization with practical solutions to the perils of global warming. He is also a writer, musician, television producer and artist.

Early life

Schofield was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He won his first National Art Competition, along with his sister Christine, at the age of eight years. He attended Nawton School, then Southwell and St. Paul's Collegiate School, Hamilton, New Zealand. At the age of 19 he won the Yorkshire Art Award and studied portrait painting with professional artist Tony Sharp in Scarborough, England.

Fine arts

The Arlington National Cemetery Painting painted by Gary S. Schofield is the only painting hung and displayed in perpetuity in Arlington National Cemetery. The ANC Visitor Center receives four million visitors each year and the painting can be found beside the Information Booth and Notable Grave Finder.

His commissioned artworks include: • The Pentagon’s September 11 painting in 2002

The Pentagon Full Honors Ceremony, which hangs in the Secretary of Defense’s office, the Pentagon

The Congressional Medal of Honor Painting on permanent display with the Congressional Medal of Honor at the Quartermaster Museum, Fort Lee, VAThis work dramatically shows the heroism of Private Watson

• His painting of Iwo Jima was chosen for the 50th anniversary image of the battle of Iwo Jima.

• He was commissioned by His Excellency John Wood, New Zealand Ambassador, to paint “The New Zealand Chancery”.

• He painted the 32 X 8 foot painting of “The Earth from Space” for Defense Systems and Orbital. The painting hangs at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.

• Portraits include: the Prince and Princess of Wales, Sir Edmund Hillary, Secretary William Perry, and General Shalikashvili. In addition, an earlier (1978) commissioned portrait, of New Zealander Jane Arnott, was recently discovered.

Lectures and writing

• He addressed American veterans of five wars, including the current conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan, at the Veterans Medical Center, Washington, D.C. on September 10, 2004 and Australian veterans at the Australian Embassy, Washington D.C. in 2007

• Author of "Iwo Jima and Gallipoli, he delivered the ANZAC lecture on the topic of Gallipoli at Georgetown University in 2005

• He addressed the leaders of the US Armed forces in the Secretary of Defense’ office at the Pentagon in 1997.

• He was honored at the Hall of Heroes at the Pentagon on August 2, 1996

• Judge for the World Bank Art Award, at the benefit of the AIDS Crisis in July 2003.

• Author of “The Future of War" for the book “Future Vision” in 1996

• Gary Schofield’s work has been presented to visiting World Leaders by Secretaries of Defense: William Perry, William Cohen, and Donald Rumsfeld, and by Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: General Shalikashvili and General Shelton. His writing and art work are currently being presented by the US Armed Forces Foundation.

• Gary Schofield wrote and delivered “The Big Picture”, a multi-media production at the New Zealand Embassy, Washington D.C. on behalf of film producer Roger Donaldson 1994.

• Co-Producer and writer of “Science in American Life” for Fairfax County Public Schools with the Smithsonian, American Chemical Society and the National Science Foundation.

• He is the producer of the “New Dimensions” educational television series.

Current activity

Returning to New Zealand he completed a degree in Biochemistry and moved to the United States in 1989. He is currently writing educational programs for US students on Grammar and History.

Honours

In the 2016 Queen's Birthday Honours, Schofield was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services an artist and to New Zealand–United States relations.
